DCSD ATHLETIC HANDBOOK

STUDENT & PARENT HANDBOOK 2023-24 EDITION

This document serves to inform students and parents about the guidelines, policies, and regulations of the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) and the Douglas County School District. It explains the expectations for athletes at each high school. One of the primary roles of the high school athletic department is to oversee the conduct of our student athletes. We urge parents to take an active part in the guidance and supervision of their son or daughter while supporting the schools in our endeavor to develop positive and productive citizens.

ATHLETIC COMPLAINT PROCESS
PUBLIC CONCERNS AND COMPLAINTS REGARDING ATHLETICS

Constructive Criticism motivated by a sincere desire to improve the quality of the athletic program is welcomed by the Board of Education.
The Board believes that complaints and grievances are best handled and resolved as close to their origin as possible.  Therefore, the proper channeling of complaints involving athletics will be as follows:

  1. Coach
  2. School Athletic Director
  3. School Principal
  4. District Athletic Director
  5. Assistant Superintendent
  6. Superintendent

Any complaint about athletic personnel shall always be referred back through proper administrative channels before it is presented to the District Athletic Director for consideration and action.  When a complaint is made directly to anyone other than the coach, the person making the complaint will be referred to the coach.

Important Note Regarding Summer Participation/Conditioning/Workouts:
Summer participation, including conditioning and workouts, does not require an athlete to be registered or to have a current physical on file. These activities are not considered “in-season,” and therefore all participation is considered voluntary per CHSAA and district guidelines.

However, if your athlete plans to participate in a fall sport, please be sure to complete a registration.  Be sure to register well in advance of the sport’s official start date (see below). Failure to do so may result in delays in clearance and could impact your athlete’s ability to participate on the first day of practice/tryouts.
