Player/Parent Expectations
- Arrive On Time. Practice typically starts at 3:00pm, or 5:15, except in special circumstances when we’re sharing the gym. Gym time is limited, and it’s important we are dressed and ready to go at practice time. When we practice at 5:15, we expect players to be in the hallway dressed and ready no later than 5:05.
- Make Basketball a Priority During the Season. Jobs and other activities must take a back seat to basketball during these 4 months. It is not allowed to miss practice for a job or another sport and expect to play on the team.
- Keep Your Grades Up. Your son is called a student athlete for a reason. We expect our players to be leaders on the court and in the classroom.
- Practice Attendance. If a player misses practice, this will affect playing time at the discretion of the coach, as individual situations dictate. When rotations change and the rhythm of the team is interrupted, there are consequences. Outside of sickness, please do everything you can to be at practice on a daily basis.
- Basketball players should be the biggest supporters of basketball players. We expect our players to watch games at the other levels. We especially want our younger players at as many varsity games as possible. This is great for our varsity players and program in general, but also shows younger players what they are striving for and our varsity is the best example of how we’re hoping to play.
- We will dress up for match days. Players on each team will decide if we are wearing team gear or dress clothes. Be a part of the team!
- We Represent MVHS Well on the Court. Players, parents, and coaches are representing Mountain Vista every time we enter a gym. Let’s all do so respectfully. There is a nationwide reffing shortage, and if things continue on the same path, high school sports could cease to exist. We need to understand that there aren’t enough qualified referees, so there will be times when we get officials who are in over their head. Please try to remember that without these officials we wouldn’t be able to play the game we love. *I will do my best with all of this advice as well…
- Parents Cheer For Our Team. Please represent Vista with a positive attitude and don’t cheer against players from the other team, even if it seems like they deserve it (i.e. ThunderRidge)
- Coaches will Coach. It is confusing for a player when they are hearing different things from different voices. Let the coaches coach during the game. We have had a lot of success for a reason. We aren’t perfect, but we do feel that we have a great staff of knowledgeable coaches. Feel free to discuss all we did wrong after the game, but let us coach during the games.
- Players need to Communicate with Coaches. If there is an issue or concern, the first step should be the player talking to his direct coach.
- Chain of Command
- Player meets with his direct coach
- Player and parents meet with direct coach
- Player and parents meet with direct coach and Coach Brian
- Player and parents meet with direct coach, Coach Brian, and Mr. Flanigan
- Player and parents meet with direct coach, Coach Brian, Mr. Flanigan, and Mr. Weaver
- *Coaches will not meet with parents without the player present.
- *Immediately following a game (particularly a loss) is not the correct time to ask for a meeting. Let the emotions settle and arrange a meeting the next day.
- *We do not discuss playing time
